WSPL Redesign
As a former professional snowboarder, I know firsthand the significance of the World Snowboard Points List (WSPL). Managed by the World Snowboard Federation, the WSPL is a dynamic, 52-week global ranking system that evaluates snowboarders worldwide.
The WSPL is a crucial tool, offering value to various key stakeholders in the professional snowboarding ecosystem:
- Event Organizers rely on WSPL rankings to seed athletes for competitions, ensuring a balanced and competitive field.
- National Federations use the WSPL to guide decisions on resource allocation and athlete support, basing their investments on objective performance data.
- Sponsors leverage WSPL rankings to assess the impact of their sponsored athletes and scout rising talent in the snowboarding world.
- Coaches refer to WSPL standings to determine athlete eligibility for limited spots in World Cup events.
- Athletes use their WSPL rankings to strategically plan their season and measure their progress against their peers.
In essence, the WSPL stands as the backbone of competitive snowboarding, shaping the sport at every level.
The Challenge
The WSPL website was last redesigned around 2018, and has not seen any significant updates since then. The design was outdated, and did not reflect the modern, dynamic nature of professional snowboarding. The ranking was not optimized for mobile devices, and the information architecture was not optimal.
Since I started working with Wyldata, who took over responsibility over the WSPL several years ago, I tried pushing for a redesign several times. However, a redesign was never a priority, and the WSPL website remained largely unchanged.
Finally, we found an opportunity to redesign the WSPL website, and I jumped at the chance to work on it.
The main objective was, to elevate the WSPL to a modern, mobile-friendly, and user-friendly platform that would appeal to all key stakeholders.
Apart from fixing the design flaws, there were also some usability issues that needed to be addressed, such as navigation challenges and a lack of clarity in information hierarchy.
Additionally, some changes had been made to the WSPL protocols, which needed to be reflected in the new WSPL design.
Without further ado, I'm proud to present some before-and-after screenshots.
